“Accessible Mounting and Positioning Technology”

Update: The National Institutes of Health awarded BlueSky Designs a Phase II SBIR grant to continue development of accessible mounting technology. Phase II began in August 2005 and will continue through August 2007. BlueSky Designs successfully completed a NIDRR-funded Phase I SBIR project to develop an independently operable mounting system. Test subjects found the system to offer advantages and benefits over existing technology. Further development will occur under the NIH grant.

This SBIR project will result in a modular mounting system, attaching to wheelchairs or tables, which individuals with limitations in strength, reach and dexterity can access, reposition and attach devices to independently. Accessible components allow the user to lock it into a stable position, unlock it, and change the tilt. Existing mounts require assistance to move, adjust, and attach or remove devices, reducing the user’s independence.

Independently Operable Device Mounting and Positioning Technology for Persons with Disabilities

This project aims to develop a powered device mounting and positioning system which enables individuals with severe physical limitations to reposition devices independently from a bed, wheelchair, or workstation via switch, joystick, or voice input. A programmable controller allows customization of the system, coordinating mounting arm movements to reposition the device to custom-chosen positions. Learn more >>
Powered Device Mounting and Positioning Technology
This system may be safely and easily operated by people with significant limitations. Its dual linkage support arms allow flexible positioning and movement in a horizontal plane. It may be set to return to and lock in a specific location. Multiple devices may attach to the upright support post, making it possible to perform two tasks concurrently. For more information about the project, check out the National Center for Technology Innovation website.
