Winter 2006-Winter 2007
Emilie Sundberg is completing a Masters in Kinesiology at the University of Minnesota. Emilie undertook usability and human factors analysis of the mount interfaces and lock setting as her Masters project. The usability testing and product evaluation forms she developed and instituted led to design improvements and increased ease of use.
Emilie also “produced” Rubie just after her stint with BlueSky Designs.
Interns for Summer 2007
Daniel Holmes is a senior in Mechanical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Daniel worked on the Powered Mount, improving the gear
drive and designing the height adjustment mechanism. We greatly appreciate
the work he accomplished and wish him all the best. Daniel’s future plans
include pursuing a Master’s in Engineering and marrying his fiancée, who
attends Macalaster College, just a few miles from BlueSky Designs.
Summers 2006 and 2007
Andy VonDuyke joined BlueSky Designs the last two years while on summer breaks from the University of Minnesota where he is a graduate student in Biology. His master’s research involved studying Great Blue Heron populations and he has begun his PhD program.
Not only is Andy a graduate student, he is an experienced industrial designer and snow sculptor, which is how he and Di met. At BSD, he focused on the development of Accessible Mounting hardware. We greatly appreciated his creativity and design expertise.
He is shown here with his daughter, Anna, at BlueSky Designs’ studio warming in September 2006.
Andy was not an intern or student in the typical sense. He is a very talented and experienced industrial designer who bravely decided to head back to school to pursue other passions.
Fall Semester 2006
Five students from the
University of Minnesota's Mechanical Engineering Senior Design course
worked with Di to develop concepts and prototypes of wheelchair mounting
hardware. Their exhibit at the Senior Design show was rated the Best in
Show. Shown with Di are (L-R) Jess Hakes, Nick Sands, Matt Sellner, Pekka
Wuollet, Charles Knealing, and Jake Lopac (seated).
Interns for Summer 2005
Brian McEwan interned with BlueSky Designs again this
summer, working on the Watercraft Transfer Mechanism. He is currently in
his senior yeart in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota.
Spring Semester 2005
Goodwin worked with a team of five students from the University of Minnesota's Mechanical Engineering Senior Design course. They analyzed the feasibility of various concepts and developed a prototype for a Powered Mounting System.
Shown here with Di, the team included (L-R) Nick Lee, Adam Niederloh, Michael Etheridge, Tom Secord, and Dustin Koep.
Nick joins BlueSky's team in July 2005; Michael graduates in December 2005; Adam begins as an HVAC engineer with an architectural and engineering firm; Tom will begin graduate school at MIT this fall; and Dustin is a Manufacturing Engineer at Anderson Windows.
Interns for Summer 2004
Kyle Kilbourn, graduate student of IT Product Design (ITPD) at the University of Southern Denmark.
Kyle contributed in many ways to BlueSky Designs, including:
- Development of RESNA Poster
- Development of Technical Materials for Tent
Technology
- Participated in Wilderness Inquiry kayak trip
- Assisted in field testing of tents and
vestibules
- Conducted videoethnographic study of watercraft
transfers
- Facilitated Watercraft Transfer Workshop

Brian McEwen,University of Minnesota Mechanical Engineering undergraduate student.
Brian has a BA in Cultural Anthropology and is interested in human factors, product design and ergonomics.
Brian worked on several projects this summer, including:
- Construction of a manual wheelchair and seating
system for product testing
- Conceptual design relating to wheelchair
mounting hardware
- Design and fabrication of a test fixture for
determining the coefficient of friction between fabrics
- Participation in Watercraft Transfer
Workshop
Spring Semester 2004
Students from the University of Minnesota's Mechanical Engineering Senior Design course developed design concepts and a prototype for a Watercraft Transfer Mechanism under
Goodwin's supervision.
